Seminole is the largest city in Seminole County and was platted in 1906, with 206 residents at statehood in 1907. The Fixico No. 1 well blew in a six-thousand-barrel gusher in 1926 and touched off the Greater Seminole Oil Field, swelling the town from 854 people to a boomtown of 25,000 to 30,000; at its height the field accounted for roughly 2.6 percent of world oil production, and the city still marks the era with its annual Gusher Days celebration. Modern anchors include Seminole State College, a public community college founded in 1931, and the city's own assets - the Jimmie Austin Regional Airport, Sportsman Lake, the Jimmie Austin Golf Course, the Reynold's Wellness Center, the Seminole Public Library and a Main Street downtown programme. Since June 2023 the town has also been a manufacturing site for Latham Group, the largest designer and manufacturer of in-ground residential swimming pools in North America, which opened a fiberglass pool plant here after being recruited with state assistance.

Soil & excavation
Stephenville-Darnell association - loamy soils over sandstone (Cross Timbers)
Per the USDA Soil Survey of Seminole County (1979), the dominant unit is Stephenville-Darnell at 34% of the county: moderately deep to shallow, well drained loamy soils formed over sandstone (about 62% Stephenville, 22% Darnell). The Darnell component is shallow to sandstone bedrock, the practical excavation risk here. The Seminole-Chickasha-Grainola association (18%) includes the Seminole series itself, a natric soil with clay to silty clay subsoil at 35-50% clay, slow permeability and 'very hard, very firm' dry consistency, meaning meaningful shrink-swell. Other units: Niotaze-Darnell-Wewoka 17% (shallow, gravelly, chert conglomerate), Gowton-Madill-Yahola 15% (deep floodplain soils where flooding is the chief limitation), Konawa-Eufaula-Teller 11% (deep sandy and loamy terrace soils), Okemah-Bates-Prue 5%. Expect red sandy loam over sandy-clay-loam to clay subsoil, with sandstone bedrock possible at shallow depth on uplands.

VERIFIED FROM THE CITY'S OWN PAGE, VERBATIM: 'Building permits are to construct, enlarge, alter, structurally repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect or construct a sign any description, or to install or alter fire extinguishing apparatus, elevators, swimming pool, or plan checking.' Swimming pools are therefore explicitly named as permit-requiring work in Seminole. The application is completed at the Community Development Office and requires property owner information, property location, type of improvement, a drawing of the improvement, and the cost of the improvement. On fees the city says only that 'Price is dependent upon the type of the improvement' - NO fee schedule or dollar figure is published, so do not quote a Seminole pool permit fee. Code Enforcement handles building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical inspections; the city's code enforcement page references the 2021 IBC family of codes with the 2020 NEC, though an older cached version of the same page cited 2015/2014 editions, so confirm the current adopted edition by phone. IMPORTANT: Seminole County itself no longer issues building permits - the county's official site states permits are now obtained through the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal's Office - so for an address outside the city limits, do not tell a customer to go to the county.
