Konawa, a Seminole word meaning 'string of beads,' sits in southwestern Seminole County at the junction of State Highways 9A and 39, on land Tom West, a mixed-blood Seminole, sold to George Northrup on January 7, 1904; the post office opened that July. The town developed as a trade center for surrounding farms and, after 1920s oil discoveries, as a base for oil-field service companies that remain important employers. The largest single facility in the area is Oklahoma Gas and Electric's Seminole Power Plant, begun in May 1968, whose 1,350-acre cooling reservoir has become one of Oklahoma's best-known bass fishing lakes; the town's population peaked at 2,707 in 1950.

Per the USDA Soil Survey of Seminole County (1979), the Konawa-Eufaula-Teller association covers 11% of the county: deep, very gently sloping to strongly sloping, well drained to somewhat excessively drained loamy and sandy soils. The Konawa series is a fine-loamy Ultic Haplustalf with a fine sandy loam surface over a sandy clay loam argillic horizon at 18-30% clay, very deep (more than 80 inches to bedrock), well drained with moderate permeability, formed in sandy and loamy Pleistocene alluvium on stream terraces in the North Cross Timbers. Note that the Konawa series type location is in Payne County, not Seminole County, so the name is not exclusive to this town. County-wide the dominant association remains Stephenville-Darnell at 34%, so shallow sandstone bedrock is a real possibility on uplands.

No official Town of Konawa website could be located (cityofkonawa.com, konawa.org, konawaok.org and townofkonawa.com all failed to resolve) and no municipal code for Konawa was found online. What IS verified is that Seminole County no longer issues building permits; the county's official site states permits are now obtained through the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal's Office. A federal contractor registry lists the Konawa Public Works Authority at 122 N. Broadway, Konawa, OK 74849, (580) 925-3775, which is likely the town office, but that is a third-party listing and is not confirmed as the permitting contact. Phone confirmation required.
