Ada is the seat of Pontotoc County and the headquarters city of the Chickasaw Nation, which established its tribal offices there in the mid-1970s and is among the area's largest employers. The city is also home to East Central University, founded in 1909 as East Central State Normal School, and to LegalShield, which began in Ada in 1972 as Pre-Paid Legal Services. USDA soil map units for Pontotoc County are dominated by Konawa and Bates fine sandy loams, Dougherty loamy fine sand, Durant loam, and Port silty clay loam on bottomlands. Critically for excavation, the county also carries multiple limestone-derived and shallow-to-limestone units - Lula loam, Lula-Talpa complex, Claremore loam, Clarita clay and Scullin-Talpa complex - consistent with the carbonate bedrock of the Arbuckle region; the Oklahoma Historical Society notes limestone quarrying and cement production have operated in the county since territorial days. High-shrink-swell clays are also mapped, including Heiden clay, Burleson clay and Durant loam. Variability is high parcel to parcel; a site-specific USDA Web Soil Survey check is warranted before digging.

The city's Building Permits & Inspections page states a permit is 'Required for any structural construction, alteration, remodel or reconstruction, including new construction for residential and commercial, room additions, swimming pools, interior remodeling, garages, carports or any other accessory building.' Ada has adopted the 2018 International Residential Code and 2018 International Building Code (2023 NEC for commercial). Permit fees are set by the City of Ada Fee Resolution published on the city site. Do not state a specific Ada fence height or fee without calling first.
