Prague was established in 1902 on former Sac and Fox Reservation land opened by the 1891 land run, founded by Czech settlers and named by Eva Barta after Prague in Bohemia. Cotton farming drove the early economy and the arrival of the Fort Smith and Western Railroad brought rapid growth, with industry and commerce diversifying the economy by the twenty-first century. The town sits at the junction of SH 99 and US 62 about seven miles north of I-40, roughly 50 miles east of Oklahoma City and 65 miles southwest of Tulsa; it is best known for the National Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague, established in 1949, and for the Prague Kolache Festival held the first Saturday in May, which celebrates Czech heritage with polka music, dancing, Czech costumes and a parade.

Soil & excavation

Per USDA SSURGO for Lincoln County (OK081), the most extensive major soil components are Stephenville (17.6%), Darnell (17.3%), Grainola (10.7%), Renthin (8.5%), Coyle (8.5%) and Pulaski (7.6%). Excavation risk here is higher than in Pottawatomie County in two ways. First, bedrock is shallower: paralithic (soft weathered Permian sandstone) restrictions in major components average about 33.5 inches deep and run as shallow as 10 inches, and Darnell - nearly a fifth of the county - is a classified 'shallow' excessively drained series with the Cr sandstone contact at roughly 11-21 inches. Second, Grainola and Renthin are clayey shrink-swell soils: Grainola reaches 47.5% clay in the Bt with linear extensibility up to 7.5, and Renthin reaches 36-38% clay with linear extensibility up to 5.9. The dominant Stephenville soils remain well-drained fine sandy loams (about 12-15% clay, 65-77% sand at the surface) over red clayey subsoil.

Under Section 12-202 of the Prague Zoning Ordinance (Section 12 of the Prague Municipal Code, adopted by Ordinance 353, effective February 14, 2000), the Building Inspector or City Manager designee is responsible for issuing Building Permits and for matters referencing the building code; Section 12-201 makes the Zoning Administrator responsible for approving Building Permits and Certificates of Occupancy. The ordinance treats swimming pools as permitted accessory structures in the R-1, R-2 and R-3 residential districts, subject to applicable city codes. Prague is not a Municode client and no online municipal code or fee schedule could be located, so NO pool permit fee, pool barrier ordinance or adopted building code edition could be verified - call City Hall.

Prague has no temperature-normals station of its own; the nearest Lincoln County station with NOAA 1991-2020 temperature normals is Chandler 5SE Mesonet (USC00341685, about 13 miles away): average highs of 79.0F in May, 87.2F in June, 91.8F in July, 91.6F in August and 84.0F in September - the coolest July and August normals of the twelve towns - with a January average low of 28.4F, giving a comfortable outdoor swim season of roughly late May through mid-September and a 214-day median freeze-free season. Precipitation IS measured locally at the Prague 2W COOP station (USC00347264, 2.5 miles out) with an annual normal of about 40.3 inches, wettest in May (5.74 in) and June (5.56 in). Severe weather history is significant: the NWS Norman tornado database records the May 5, 1960 F5 tornado, which tracked 72 miles from south of Shawnee between Paden and Prague on toward Sapulpa with a maximum width of 800 yards, 5 killed and 81 injured. Prague is also an area of documented induced seismicity - USGS lists a magnitude 5.7 earthquake on November 6, 2011 and a magnitude 5.1 on February 3, 2024, both centred 8 km northwest of Prague. Ground movement is a legitimate design consideration for pool shells and surrounding decking here in a way it is not in most of the country. FROST LINE NOT FOUND for Prague: no accessible municipal code exists to check. Oklahoma's adopted IRC leaves the value for each jurisdiction to fill in and the IRC baseline is a minimum 12 inches below undisturbed ground; nearby Shawnee adopted 18 inches. Confirm with City Hall before quoting a footing depth.
